Pavol Jozef Šafárik University
Welcome to Košice!
Did you know that every year there is a celebration called “Days of Košice”? The celebration began in 1995 and takes place every year since then on May 7th. The history behind this is even more interesting, on May 7th 1369 King Louis the Great issued a royal armorial warrant granting Košice, as the first city in Europe, its coat of arms!
Ján Kňazovický
The idea of establishing a medical faculty in Košice came from none other than the excellent surgeon prof. MUDr. Ján Kňazovický. The proposal to open the faculty of medicine was submitted on May 10th 1948, 11 years before the establishment of the university. The first meeting of the teaching staff took place in September 1948. Ján Kňazovický contributed to, not only the development of surgery, but also to the development of healthcare and the education of new doctors in eastern Slovakia!
